Canada Day Celebration

July-1st-Canada-Day-Fireworks-2014-7We hope all our fellow Canadians had a fantastic Canada Day!
We celebrated at Surrey’s Canada Day Celebration and enjoyed a night full of live music and fireworks.

We’ve never celebrated Canada Day in Surrey before, we usually stay closer to home and family. But when we heard that one of our all time favourite Canadian artist’s, Matthew Good, was going to be performing we didn’t hesitate. It was a bonus when we found out that 2 more Canadian musicians that we’re fans of were also going to be taking the stage.

It was jam packed with an estimated 60-100,000 people! We got there just when Kyprios was taking the stage and we managed to get a spot right up at the front of the stage. Perfect for pictures and right before it got completely crazy with limited standing room.

CanadaDayKypriosThis was our second time seeing hip hop musician, Kyprios
Just like the first time, he was amazing and got the crowd pumped up with his non-stop high energy performance.

This North Vancouver native has been in the music scene since 2000. He’s done Vancouver proud with a Juno nomination in 2005 for ‘Ignorance Is Beautiful’ and winning The 2010 Peak Performance Project for local emerging artists.

DanielWesley3We were happy to see White Rock-native Daniel Wesley perform again. We have also been to a couple of his shows in the past. His music has that chill, beach-y, feel good groove to it & makes the perfect Summertime Soundtrack.

IMG_5809ygMatthew Good was the main reason why we decided to celebrate Canada Day in Surrey. We are both huge fans of his music and have seen him perform numerous times over the years. So we definitely couldn’t pass up the chance to see him live close by and for free. He played a perfect set (as always) and performed fan favourites Alert Status Red, Weapon, Load Me Up, Had It Coming, Hello Time Bomb, So Close, Last Parade, Guns of Carolina and more.

Concert Review: Max Frost at The Commodore – June 25, 2014.

photo (9)On Wednesday night we had the pleasure of seeing bands Holy Child, Max Frost & Fitz and the Tantrums sold-out show at the Commodore Ballroom in Vancouver. While I really enjoyed Holy Child and Fitz and the Tantrums’ performances, I am writing this post solely on Max Frost. When I hear an artist with as much talent as he has, I feel it is my legit duty to help spread the word. I can’t help but tell everyone about these melodic gems of songs that should be gracing their ears! 😉 Honestly though.. his music is amazing and more people should be listening to his tunes.

I’ve been a big fan of his music for awhile now and actually wrote a post about his hit song ‘White Lies’ a year ago, (which you can read here).

Opening and getting a crowd pumped up and ready for such a high-energy band such as Fitz and the Tantrums (who are known for their incredible live performances) is no easy task. However, 21-year-old Max Frost did just that and made it look effortless. He has that rare blend of natural charisma, confidence and showmanship that can’t be taught and oozes soul within every song.

His songs sound like an eclectic mix of a wide range of different genres combined. Hip hop, funk, pop, rock, alt, & r&b – all wrapped up in one. To me, the main sound and underlying genre in his music is good ole’ soul. Frost’s music will simply make you feel. (his music may also give you an uncontrollable urge to sway and dance. don’t say I didn’t warn you.)

Max’s set list included a number of catchy songs off his 2013 EP release ‘Low High Low’ and also included some new unreleased songs that will be on his upcoming debut album. Highlights of the show include Max’s groovy cover of Rick James’ classic 1981 hit ‘Give It To Me Baby‘ which got the whole crowd moving, and Frost’s incomparable guitar skills. Multiple times throughout the show Frost would have two guitars slung around his neck, playing the top guitar without missing a note. A super impressive performance from a young singer-songwriter/multi-instrumentalist.

Max Frost is currently on tour in the US until July 30th with Fitz and the Tantrums. If you get the chance to see him live, do it! He’s an insanely talented artist that’s bound to become a worldwide star very soon.

Gotta Hear This: Better Man by Paolo Nutini

paolo-nutini-caustic-love-album-artAlbum Highlights: Scream (Funk My Life Up), Let Me Down Easy, Numpty, Better Man, Iron Sky & Someone Like You.

After a 5 year hiatus, Paolo Nutini is back and better than ever with a brand new album. His third studio album ‘Caustic Love‘ was just released on April 11, 2014 and is already well on its way to becoming the fastest selling album of 2014 so far.

The 27-year-old Scottish singer was the biggest selling male artist in the UK in 2009 & 2010. His debut album ‘These Streets’ sold over 2 million copies worldwide and produced mega hits such as ‘Last Request’ & ‘Jenny Don’t Be Hasty’. His second studio album ‘Sunny Side Up‘ was released in 2009, debuted at No. 1 and is now certified 5x platinum.

Caustic Love is my favourite album of his yet. Nutini’s new songs are more soulful, bluesy & mature than his previous releases and his stellar songwriting really shines on this album. Tracks ‘Scream (Funk My Life Up)’, and ‘Fashion’ are faster groove-filled songs that will make you want to move while ballads ‘Better Man’, ‘One Day’ & ‘Iron Sky’ are beautifully written and really focus on Paolo’s sultry, textured vocals. ‘Let Me Down Easy’ features Janelle Monae and is a clear standout track that is full of soul and emotion. ‘Numpty’ is another standout track with its hip-swaying melody and cute, cheeky lyrics – I guarantee you won’t be able to listen to ‘Numpty’ without grinning.

Gotta Hear This: In My Head by Dream Lake

dream-lakeDream Lake is an indie dreampop duo from Sweden comprised of musicians Isabella Svärdstam (vocals, piano) and Niklas Willar Lidholm (guitar, vocals). Their six-track self titled EP was released on December 9th, 2013.

Dream Lake’s music is literally that: Dream-like – complete with melancholic melodies, gorgeous synths & soft ethereal vocals. All six tracks on their EP are strong and mesh wonderfully. Dream Lake is definitely a band to watch for.

If you are a fan of artists like The xx and Ellie Goulding, you will definitely enjoy Dream Lake.

Check out my favourite track from their EP called ‘In My Head‘:
