Valentine, Oh Sweet Valentine!
{We’re at it again. We can’t be stopped now, we’re on a roll.}
This time we decided to try these delicious Red Velvet Mini Donuts. Oh so adorable.

These red velvet donuts are little mouthfuls of Valentine’s goodness. If you love red velvet, you will looove these donuts!
They are soft & not overly sweet. The icing balances the overall flavour, and adds that little bit of sweetness that red velvet cakes need.
Being that these are mini donuts, you can feel less guilty about devouring 10 of these little guys instead of one big donut! 😉

This recipe is super easy to make, and is one of our favorite Valentine’s treats.

Oh, I just have to point out this vintage apron I’m wearing.
My parents got it for me this Christmas and I was more than giddy over it.

Mini Red Velvet Donuts
Mini Red Velvet Donuts topped with a Vanilla Glaze Icing.

Donut Batter
  1. {yield 4 dozen mini donuts}
  2. 1 tbs. red food colouring
  3. 2 tbs. cocoa powder
  4. 2 c. flour sifted
  5. 3/4 c. granulated sugar
  6. 2 tsp. baking powder
  7. 1/2 tsp. salt
  8. 3/4 c. buttermilk
  9. 1 tsp. pure vanilla extract
  10. 2 eggs, lightly beaten
  11. 2 tbsp. melted butter
Vanilla Glaze Icing
  1. 2-4 tbsp. hot water
  2. 2 c. confectioner’s sugar
  3. 1 tbsp. milk
  4. 1/2 tsp. vanilla extract
Instructions
  1. Mix together food colouring and cocoa powder to form a paste in small bowl.
  2. Preheat oven to 375 F. Spray donut pans with a nonstick cooking spray.
  3. In a large mixing bowl sift together flour, sugar, baking powder and salt.
  4. Add buttermilk, eggs, vanilla extract, butter and the red paste mixture beating until combined.
  5. Fill each donut cup approximately 3/4 of the way full.
  6. Bake 5-8 minutes making sure to not over cook. (In our oven they were perfect after 5 minutes)
  7. Let donuts cool in the pan an additional 3-5 minutes before removing onto a wire rack.
  8. Let donuts cool completely before icing.
Vanilla Glaze Icing
  1. In a small bowl, stir all of the ingredients together until sugar is completely dissolved. Use icing immediately to glaze tops of the donuts. We found it was easy to dunk the tops of the donuts into the glaze then place onto a wire rack until set.
  2. Tip: If icing forms and becomes too thick while glazing the donuts, add a drop or 2 of hot water, mixing well.

  1. I have to ask, after all these posts, when is your Valentine’s Day? Is it different than ours, which hazy recollection of misery past seems to inform me is about a month away, or are you girls just really getting a good run up at things!

    I don’t think I’ve ever seen a mini-doughnut tray before. Possibly because our natural doughnuts are a completely different shape and have jam (jelly) in them.

      No, no, our Valentine’s Day is the same day as yours! February 14 :)

      We are just making Valentine recipes early so readers have plenty of variety to choose from!

      We also have jam filled donuts here although we’ve never attempted to make them ourselves yet.
      However, a couple of weeks ago we did discuss giving them a go someday. They seem a tad more difficult to make so that should be an interesting experience! ha!

      • You’re certainly getting the full use out of your red food colouring!

        I’ve never made doughnuts – I always thought they involved deep frying – although I once tried to inject jam into sponge cupcakes so it’d be there in the middle. I did this after cooking them and it didn’t work out well at all. When they were cut in half the amount of jam in them looked pitiful.
