I started running about 4 years ago. At the time, I was 20 lbs heavier & wanted to be healthier and get into better shape. I still remember the very first run that I went on… it was absolutely horrible and I loathed every second of it. I could hardly run down the street without gasping for air. I ended up going around the block and walking the majority of the way home. It was not fun at all but for some reason, I was determined to keep going and pushed myself to run about 2-4 times a week.

For the first few months I stuck to the same short route alternating between walking for a few minutes than running a few minutes. Slowly but surely, I started to see and feel the difference in my body and it wasn’t long before I added on time to my route making it longer.

I still run about 2-5 times a week and absolutely love it. I never time my runs and honestly have no idea how far I go. I feel like if I start doing that than it will start being a competition and I might feel the need to constantly beat that time. I run strictly for enjoyment and don’t want to turn running into something I feel like I have to do.

I love the fact that running is so accessible & is completely free. You’re not tied down to a class every week. You can run anywhere at anytime and all you really need is a good pair of running shoes (and sports bra!).

Another reason why I love running? Workout gear! If you are looking for a little motivation to help get back into shape, a little shopping may do the trick! Workout gear is so bright, colourful and fun. I know that I definitely feel a little more inspired to get up and workout when I have a new outfit to wear and show off! 😉

A pair of comphy lightweight shorts is a must when it comes to Summertime running.

I love this pair of Spark Shorts* from Icebreaker’s 2015 Spring Collection. They are made with a sustainable, odour-resistant fiber called merino wool which is designed to keep the body cool in even the most hot & humid conditions. The material is extremely comfortable & prevents overheating making it the perfect choice for Summertime workouts!

Tips To Start Running:

1) Don’t Give Up.
Running is not the funnest thing in the world when you are first starting out. Stick with it. It gets easier and you will see the results.

2) Listen to Your Body.
If you really don’t feel like running very far, don’t! There’s going to be bad run days and good run days. Some days you might do more walking than running and that’s totally okay! Just keep going.

3) Make A Kickass Workout Playlist.
I have a Running Playlist filled with upbeat songs ready to go whenever I’m in the mood for a run. Running to music makes the time go by that much quicker and makes it way more enjoyable.  (New runners: Try running for the full length of one song than walking during the next).

Yum! Start your day off right with a healthy, fruit smoothie! I made this smoothie this morning for the first time, and loved it. It’s easy to make & perfect for those summer mornings.

1 small banana
1/2 cup blueberries
1 cup fresh raspberries
2 strawberries chopped
3/4 cup vanilla yogurt
1 tablespoon honey
4 small ice cubes
1 teaspoon hemp seeds (optional)

Place banana, blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, yogurt, honey, hemp seeds and ice cubes into a blender. Blend until smooth.

Healthy Pumpkin Smoothie

My pumpkin addiction continues with this Healthy Pumpkin Smoothie!

(I promise this will be the last pumpkin recipe for awhile 😉 )

Like almost every other girl, I am guilty of being obsessed with Starbuck’s Pumpkin Spice Lattes & Frappuccinos. When September rolls around, they are literally the only thing I want to drink & they are one of my favorite things about Fall. What I don’t like is the $5 a drink price tag. (right ladies?!)

My mom & I decided to make our own Pumpkin Smoothie. Not only is it a lot cheaper to make, it is also healthier for you & super tasty!

Healthy Pumpkin Smoothie Ingredients + Directions

Recipe adapted from

1/2 cup canned pumpkin, frozen (freeze pumpkin in a plastic container for a few hours before use)
2 bananas, frozen (unpeel, chop & freeze)
1 cup soy milk (or almond, regular)
1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
2 teaspoon brown sugar
1/8 teaspoon nutmeg

Combine all ingredients in blender and blend until smooth. Top with crushed graham crackers, or top with whipped cream & a sprinkle of cinnamon!

Mango & Strawberry Banana Smoothie

I have been on a total smoothie kick lately and have been trying out different kinds of smoothie recipes… Some turned out decent, others not so good. Than I came across this little gem – a delicious Mango & Strawberry Banana Smoothie and it’s so tasty, I had to share this one with you guys – believe me, it’s a keeper!

Fresh, fruity, healthy, pretty, & easy to make! (What more could you want?)

I found the recipe on myrecipes which you can find here, but I have adapted it slightly.

Mango & Strawberry Banana Smoothie
Write a review
  1. (Yield: 2 smoothies)
  2. 1 mango (peeled, and coarsely chopped)
  3. 1 1/4 cups total of plain low-fat yogurt
  4. 2 tablespoons honey
  5. 1 tablespoon freshly squeezed lime juice
  6. pinch of freshly grated lime zest
  7. 1 banana (peeled & chopped)
  8. 10 medium sized strawberries (washed, and chopped)
  9. 1 tablespoon freshly squeezed lemon juice
  10. pinch of freshly grated lemon zest
To make the Mango Layer
  1. In a blender, combine the mango, 3/4 cup yogurt, 1 tablespoon of honey, 1 tablespoon fresh lime juice, pinch of lime zest & 2 ice cubes. Blend until combined. Divide the mango smoothie into 2 glasses, and set aside. Rinse the blender.
To make the Strawberry Banana Layer
  1. Combine the banana, strawberries, 1/2 cup yogurt, 1 tablespoon honey, 1 tablespoon lemon juice, pinch of lemon zest, and 2 ice cubes and blend until smooth.
  2. Using a large spoon, GENTLY scoop the strawberry banana layer onto the inside edges of the glass on top of the mango layer. Do not pour the strawberry layer right on top of the mango layer straight from the blender, or else you won’t get the nice crisp horizontal line. (The first time I made a layered smoothie, it didn’t clarify how to pour the layer on top and I ended up with a swirly smoothie, instead of layered 😉 ) Take your time, and using a spoon drop small amounts at a time.
