{Interview} Erika Windischmann of ClassE Stitches

IMG_4119g2bbCrochet coffee cozies have been extremely popular lately. Pictures of Starbucks cups with adorable handmade cozies have been popping up all over blogs & Instagram and we just can’t get enough! They’re super cute and make the perfect gift for any coffee lover. We bought our first cozies last year (which you can see here) and we still use them constantly. Everywhere we went, people would seem to stop us and comment on the cozies and ask where we got them from. The answer is Etsy! You can find all kinds of coffee cozies and numerous other handmade goodies all on Etsy.

Erika Windischmann is the Owner & Creator of Etsy Shop: ClassE Stitches. Along with being a full-time college student, Erika opened up her own Etsy shop in February 2013. Her shop features a variety of decorative & fashionable handmade crochet items. Everything from colourful coffee cozies, scarfs and rings to adorable baby booties & stylish boot cuffs.

I received this gorgeous yellow coffee cozy (pictured above) from Erika of ClassE Stitches and I’m in love! It’s the perfect colour for Spring and is made impeccably.

Erika was kind enough to chat with us and answer a few questions about her shop…

Erika Windischmann Headshot #1Erika Windischmann, Owner & Creator of ClassE Stitches.

When & how did you learn how to crochet?
: I was about 10 years old when my Aunt Andrea taught me how to crochet. She taught me the basics, and since then I’ve watched tutorials online and have learned more advanced stitches.

Is your Etsy shop your main job?
Erika: Crocheting is a hobby of mine, but it would be wonderful to call it my job if that’s what I could do for a living! It gives me something to do in between my college work.

What is the top-selling item in your Etsy shop?

Erika: From October-February, pretty much the only item I’m making are my boot cuffs, so I would say that they’re my most popular item. It’s normal for me to be filling 2 pairs per order. My customers just can’t get enough!

If you could only crochet one item for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Erika: Anyone who really knows me knows how much I love blankets. I am always cold! A blanket absolutely has to be the one item I could only crochet for the rest of my life for that very reason. Plus, it was the first thing I learned to crochet, so that will always be special to me.

What advice would you give to someone who is wanting to learn how to crochet?
Erika: Don’t give up! Crocheting is easier than it looks. There are tons of great YouTube videos out there that teach you different kinds of stitches step-by-step! Start out learning the basic ones until you’re ready to move onto more involved stitches. Holding the hook and working the yarn can feel a little awkward at first, but you’ll soon be comfortable with it the more you practice!
